| Claims Made and Reported: A
Journey Through D&O, E&O and Other Professional Lines of
Insurance is a combination memoir, history and overview of
the professional lines insurance industry. Written by Larry Goanos,
an active insurance professional with twenty years in the industry,
it contains stories and observations from more than 400 individuals
whose careers stretch as far back as the 1940s. Far from being a
dry academic volume, this work illuminates the careers of some of
the titans of professional lines insurance and provides valuable
insights for success in virtually any business. It also contains
fascinating facts about a wide array of insurance industry people,
companies and products. In this book you’ll hear about such
colorful characters as the broker whose suit was seemingly in flames
during a meeting but he continued to talk, the mid-level executive
who bought a Rolls Royce as his company car (on his lunch hour no
less) and the underwriter who concocted a clever scheme to scam
his colleagues out of their lunch money when he was short on funds
(we don’t recommend copying this strategy…) It’s
a great read for insurance industry participants in particular and
business people in general.
"I read your book over the weekend and enjoyed it thoroughly... The section
about 9/11 was particularly moving. I hope our insurance managers got copies
as I know they would enjoy it as I did. It deserves accolades."
—Warren Buffett, Chairman & CEO, Berkshire Hathaway, Inc.
Claims Made & Reported is an overview of the professional lines
insurance industry in the United States, England and Bermuda. Author Goanos
interviewed more than 400 active and retired industry participants to document
some of the more colorful events in the history of this insurance sector. The
book features a wealth of anecdotes and observations, many of which appear in
writing for the first time. Mr. Buffett commented: "I hope our insurance
managers got copies as I know they would enjoy it as I did. It deserves accolades."
One of the world's foremost philanthropists, Mr. Buffett was also pleased that
all of the book's net proceeds are being donated to four charities. "Here's
hoping you sell out and [the] charities get a big check," he wrote in an
e-mail to the author.
Tracing the development of the professional lines industry from as far back
as 1688 (the creation of Lloyds) up through 2008, Claims Made & Reported
recounts industry events and experiences that run the gamut from humorous to
heartbreaking. The book features chapters on a variety of topics, including
AIG, other companies in professional lines insurance and the tragedy of September
11, 2001. It also includes profiles of some amazing people, including Mr. Buffett,
in the books Professional Lines Insurance All-Star and Hall of Fame chapters.
All net proceeds from the sale of Claims Made & Reported are split
equally among The National September 11 Memorial & Museum, The National
Transplant Assistance Fund, The PLUS Foundation and The Aniridia Foundation
International.

This is written with great wit and style. Larry must have an enormous Rolodex
to mention all the names that he did. Some I hadn't seen in ages. I congratulate
him on pulling off such an innovative subject and making one smile in the process.
It's a valuable read for all industry participants, including attorneys.
— Tom Wilson, Sr., Co-Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz,

It was great a trip down memory lane. The J&H part brought a tear to my

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was really fun to recall so many memories
of people and places that were near, and most of the time, dear to me. There
are many times that I wish I were back in that environ and fighting those battles
and creating the memories all over gain. I will look back at the book often
to remind me of the good friends and the times that we had.
— Bill Kelly, Attorney & Risk Management Consultant
